Bonaire Extension Project (Bonaire)

About

Bonaire SWRO facility modular prefabricated design model MPD platform assembled via off-site manufacturing (OSM) was extended to further support the region’s access to clean drinking water.

The project extension including all infrastructure, engineering, procurement, OSM, installation, and commissioning was completed in the record time of just 13 months. The extension adds 2,400 m3/d of drinking water to the 5,600 m3/d of drinking water already produced, to meet the current and future demands of Bonaire’s growing population.

Bonaire’s facility’s low energy consumption and chemical-free processes support the island’s sustainability goals, is also fully automated when in normal operation.

The project also included a new post-treatment facility for remineralization in the capacity of 6,000 m³/d providing enriched mineralized drinking water. The system’s modular design including a calcite loading system, enables future expansion of up to 18,000 m³/d.

The plant will continue to support the island’s sustainable operations in its challenging, isolated location showcasing IDE’s ability to deliver flexible environmentally conscious desalination solutions.

Highlights

  • IDE OSM MPD Modular Design Approach

Offsite manufacturing and installation methodology minimizing site execution risks and disruptions to ongoing operations, significantly reducing project timelines, while ensuring high-quality outcomes, and cost savings.

  • Top Efficiency – Low Energy Consumption

High-level preassembly of sub-systems drives construction efficiency, resulting in low electrical consumption and 15% cost savings.
Low guaranteed value of 2.5- kwh/m3 with the actual consumption of 2.59 kwh/m3, compared to the typical energy consumption of 3-5 kwh/m3 in similar projects.

  • Environment-Friendly Desalination

The Bonaire plant utilizes sustainable solutions, such as a chemical-free desalination technology producing clean water from standard seawater without chemicals. This is achieved through Direct Osmosis Cleaning (DOC) mechanical membrane cleaning system.
