A delegation of journalists arranged by MediaCentral, a non-profit liaison service venture, recently toured the Sorek facility – the largest desalination plant in the world, to learn about the Israeli success story and the technological innovation that inspired the need to generate clean drinking water in challenging surroundings.

Among the media attended USA Today, Time magazine, Getty & Bloomberg Environment (US), Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Germany), Kyodo news (Japan), Science and Technology Daily (China), Mediaset (Italy) and Record TV (Brazil).

During the tour, participants attended a presentation by Dr. Boris Liberman, VP and CTO of Membrane Technologies at IDE, and were introduced to IDE’s innovative desalination technology and the impact it has on creating sustainable water solutions. Hila Koren, Marketing Manager at IDE, shared more about the history of IDE and how Israel has become a drought-resistant nation thanks to desalination.

IDE oversees three of the five desalination plants that have opened since 2005, including Sorek, Hadera and Ashkelon. Today, roughly 70 percent of Israel’s potable water comes from desalination and it is expected to hit over 80 percent after Sorek 2 will begin operation.
